Church History

Tranquil Prior to 1970

Little is known of the origin of Tranquil Methodist Church. It is commonly assumed that it took its name from its tranquil setting. There are no available records showing an authentic history, but Tranquil is thought to have been organized in 1820. According to historical data taken from The Index Journal of May 18, 1911, W. K. Blake, a life long resident of Greenwood, is of the opinion that Tranquil dates back as long, or longer, than Rock Presbyterian Church which was organized in 1770. From other records, James Glenn, who settled in the community in 1814, became active at Tranquil Church and then helped organize Rehoboth Church in 1812. Isabella Tolbert joined the church in 1822, and her father helped to organize the first church. Records indicate that services have been held continuously since at least 1822, making it “the birthplace of Greenwood Methodism.”  A church history written in 1897 states that “it is known to have been a preaching place for nearly a century.” Tranquil has long been a place of worship in our community, as a brush arbor before construction of a log cabin in 1820. In 1838, a frame building was erected. In 1939, six Sunday school rooms were added, but were torn down and replaced in 1953. Memorial stained glass windows were installed in 1947. Tranquil became a station church in 1952, after having been a part of several circuits.
